ACE2 and COVID-19: Although our primary data does not show gut inflammation as a specific factor for SARS-CoV-2 entry mechanism, the high expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 along with the apposition of plasma cells in the gut lamina propria suggests that the gastrointestinal tract may play a role in SARS-CoV-2 entry and the antecedent host humoral immune response in COVID-19.
