In an ocular infection model of Herpes-Simplex Virus-1, it has been shown that loss of Nlrp3 is associated with increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β and TNF-α, increased infiltration of neutrophils, and enhanced Th1 and Th17 cell responses (Gimenez et al., 2016).
