Recent clinical trials of glucose-lowering therapies including glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (LEADER trial) and sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial), report beneficial cardiovascular disease outcomes in type 2 diabetes patients (Zinman et al., 2015; Marso et al., 2016).
