Any change in the gene expression of MUC1 must be examined carefully as its balance seems to be essential for cell homeostasis: An overexpression of MUC1 has been linked to the development of colorectal cancer and an acceleration of intestinal inflammatory processes [65,66], whereas Muc1 deficiency was connected to an increased susceptibility to the invasion of the intestinal epithelium by pathogens [37,38,39]. This evidence concerns the gene MUC1 and colorectal cancer.
