In the bilateral cleft lip affected tissue, very strong statistically significant correlations (rs = 0.8–1.0) were seen between the number of PAX9-containing epitheliocytes in the epithelium and the number of PAX9-containing connective tissue cells (rs = 0.882, p < 0.001), between the number of PAX7-containing epitheliocytes in the epithelium and the number of RYK-containing cells in the epithelium (rs = 0.869, p < 0.001). The gene discussed is PAX9; the disease is cleft lip.
