While some inflammatory mediators were unchanged (sVCAM-1, p = 0.148 and sCD40L, p = 0.467 and CRP, p = 0.661), other serum markers of inflammation were increased in IDM/NIDDM (E-selectin, p = 0.005 and IL-6, p = 0.051) (Figure 3), pointing to a rather inflammatory and thrombotic phenotype in response to hyperglycemic conditions.
