In preeclampsia, decreased expression of antioxidants such as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), HO-2, copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase fails to counterbalance the increased ROS production, leading to lipid peroxidation, increased thromboxane A2 and loss of GPx activity in the placenta [37]. Here, HMOX1 is linked to preeclampsia.
