A beneficial effect of iron chelation on photosensitivity and hemolysis was recently demonstrated in a murine CEP model as well as in a human erythroid cell line from a CEP patient, in which inhibition of iron-dependent erythroid-specific ALAS2 expression and iron-responsive element-binding protein 2 led to decreased porphyrin production [110]. This evidence concerns the gene ALAS2 and cutaneous porphyria.
