ESR1 and leishmaniasis: Notwithstanding that our findings showed AR as a possible target for leishmaniasis treatment, studies with tamoxifen, an anticancer drug that acts as a nonsteroidal estrogen receptor modulator, presents antileishmanial activity (48, 49) by inhibiting the parasite’s inositol phosphorylceramide (50) with reduced chances of selecting resistant parasites (51).
