The lipids, C18:0 spingomyelin (d18:1/18:0) (N-octadecanoyl-sphing-4-enine-1-phosphocholine) and its derivative C18:1 spingomyelin (d18:1/18:1(9Z)) (N-(9Z-octadecenolyl)-sphing-4-enine-1-phosphocholine) have been used in the search of additional biomarkers for AD, where they were found to be considerably higher in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) of patients displaying pathological levels of amyloid-β42, total tau, and phosphorylated-tau-181 [32]. This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Alzheimer disease.
