A similar methylation profile was found for anxiety symptoms, as lower STAI-S scores were associated to higher degree of CRY2 methylation, but only when low levels of oxytocin are present (OR = 6.96; P = 0.019); consistently, for high levels of the hormone, increments in CRY2 methylation was associated to a higher risk of more severe anxiety symptoms (higher STAI-S scores) (OR = 0.06; P = 0.020).
