We observed that Paneth cells did not acquire TUNEL- or cleaved Caspase 3-positivity on any of the examined days post infection, ruling out apoptosis as the major mechanism of Paneth cell death (Figure 2), even though it was previously reported that in some rare cases IFN-γ is capable to activate caspase-3/7-dependent pathway of cell death in Paneth cells (Eriguchi et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene CASP3 and infection.
