Importantly, the loss or inhibition of P2X7 was also shown to repress the self-renewal of leukemia-initiating cells and to inhibit leukemogenesis in acute myeloid leukemia mouse models [21, 22, 68], providing further rationale to explore P2X7 antagonists as part of cancer therapy regimens.
