Mutations of the AIRE gene lead to the development of autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 1 (APS1) or autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy syndrome: a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the development of Addison's disease, hypoparathyroidism, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis [8, 9]. Here, AIRE is linked to autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1.
