Elevated levels of sACE2 have been detected in critically ill COVID-19 patients (Van Lier et al., 2021) which coincides with a reduced expression of membrane-bound ACE2 (Medina-Enríquez et al., 2020), and a recent study indicates that sACE2 may assist SARS-CoV-2 entry into cells via other receptors (Yeung et al., 2021). This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
