SOD1 and cancer: Similarly, another Cu-dependent protein known as superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) which is a regulator of vasoconstriction and endothelial function, is overexpressed associated with elevated Cu levels in cancers, which eventually stimulates VEGF production and enhances FGF-induced angiogenesis and tumour development, while a decrease in SOD1 activity has been shown to impair angiogenesis (Xiao and Ge, 2012; Shanbhag et al., 2019).
