Ackr3 is considered a scavenger of the CXC chemokine CXCL12, which prevents leukocytes from entering the microvasculature of the brain; thus, upregulation of Ackr3 promotes blood-brain barrier impairment and inflammatory brain injury (Cruz-Orengo et al., 2011; Silwedel et al., 2018).
