SLC1A2 and Alzheimer disease: With significant neuronal loss, the reorientation of astrocyte processes towards amyloid plaques, and increased astrocytosis, the cellular architecture of the hippocampus and cortex seems to be disorganized in AD compared to healthy controls (Buldyrev et al., 2000; Colombo et al., 2000, 2002), which might contribute to the diffuse EAAT2 staining that remains localized to astrocytic processes.
