Systemic low-grade inflammation, characterized by increases in inflammatory biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count (WBCC), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and Tumour Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α) (1), has been associated with a higher risk of some chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes (2) and all-cause mortality (3).
