In particular, several reports have associated dyslipidemia with increased severity and mortality of COVID-19 (reviewed in [55]), which led to suggestions for lipid-lowering therapies of COVID-19 patients [56], including the administration of statins [57], that inhibit HMG-CoA reductase—a rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol synthesis, to COVID-19 patients.
