Several inflammatory cytokines, such as the intercellular adhesion molecule 1, C-reactive protein, interleukins 1 and 6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and vascular endothelial growth factor, are elevated in both the serum and the peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis, suggesting that endometriosis is associated with local and systemic inflammation [6,12]. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is endometriosis.
