The Lindsey group has conducted several studies inhibiting specific MMPs in post-MI mouse models, finding that pharmacological inhibition of MMP9 and MMP12 reduced ejection fractions compared to saline-treated controls, with anti-MMP9 treatment increasing leukocyte infiltration and both treatments reducing apoptosis at 1 week post-MI (105, 106). This evidence concerns the gene MMP9 and myocardial infarction.
