Moreover, unidentified mutations causing upregulated expression of the zwf gene coding for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, a key enzyme of glucose catabolism, have been reported (Silo-Suh et al., 2005) in P. aeruginosa clinical isolates from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), who very frequently develop chronic P. aeruginosa lung infections.
