The potential role of NF-κB as a contributor in OLP pathogenesis and as a possible therapeutic target has been also supported by Rhodus et al. (52), who noticed a significant decrease in the levels of NF-κB-dependent cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-6 and IL-8) in saliva following topical dexamethasone treatment in patients with erosive OLP, as well as a positive correlation between the reduction in IL-1α and IL-8 levels and the improvement in OLP symptoms as assessed by VAS. This evidence concerns the gene TNF and oral lichen planus.
