Although first-line multikinase inhibitors (sorafenib and lenvatinib) can prolong the survival of patients with advanced HCC (8–10), and multitarget tyrosine inhibitors (e.g., regorafenib and cabozantinib) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor inhibitors (e.g., ramucirumab) can provide benefit for patients who previously tolerated sorafenib (11), most cases of HCC show tolerance or become refractory to these agents during the clinical course of the disease (12). The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is hepatocellular carcinoma.
