Nevertheless, 4% of the investigated cancers showed TERC amplification, which was associated with increased telomere length (Barthel et al. 2017), resembling earlier findings that telomeres are strongly elongated by combined ectopic expression of TERT and TERC (Cristofari & Lingner 2006) and that TERC expression restricts telomerase activity in TERT-expressing human embryonic stem cells (Chiba et al. 2015).
