Since the TMPRSS2 is involved in other viral infections such as coronavirus (MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, hCoV-EMC, and HCoV-229E) (Glowacka et al., 2011; Bertram et al., 2013; Gierer et al., 2013; Shirato et al., 2013), hepatitis C virus (Esumi et al., 2015), and influenza A virus (Shen et al., 2020), it would be an attractive alternative against a wide spectrum of respiratory viruses, especially SARS-CoV-2. Here, TMPRSS2 is linked to viral infectious disease.
