Given (i) the overall attenuated estimates for lifetime use found in our study, and given (ii) that methylation quantitative trait loci (mQTLs) may underlie our observed changes in NR3C1 methylation (as discussed further below), this may indicate that NR3C1 is involved more in those maladaptive processes that are related to substance abuse, and less in those processes that underlie experimental or occasional use. The gene discussed is NR3C1; the disease is substance abuse.
