Storti and Grimm (2019) reported the essential role of the ABCA1/G1 pathway and the mechanism of active cholesterol efflux in the RPE, rods, and retinal inflammatory cells. Interestingly, in a study we have previously reported, the pathway of ABC transporters was also found to be associated with plasma metabolites that are altered in retinopathy of prematurity, which is another kind of ocular neovascular disease that occurs in premature infants (Zhou et al., 2020). The gene discussed is ABCG2; the disease is retinopathy of prematurity.
