IFN-β fuels the formation of macrophage foam cells via a macrophage scavenger receptor class A (SR-A)-mediated cholesterol influx and an ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABCA1)-mediated efflux of mechanisms, thus expediting the incidence of atherosclerosis (Boshuizen et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene IFNB1 and atherosclerosis.
