Numerous hypotheses, such as the Aβ hypothesis (Hardy and Selkoe, 2002), the oxidative stress hypothesis (Maccioni et al., 2010), and the Tau protein abnormal phosphorylation hypothesis (Terry and Buccafusco, 2003), have attempted to explain the etiology of AD and have targeted both genetic and environmental factors (Wenk, 2003), yet the causative mechanisms of this disease remain elusive. Here, MAPT is linked to Alzheimer disease.
