IL6 and myocardial infarction: IL-6 promotes platelet aggregation and thrombosis by stimulating the production of PAI in liver (Sakamoto et al., 1992), up-regulates the expression of ICAM-1 in cardiomyocytes to increase the release of oxygen free radicals, and accelerates the decrease of Ca2+ concentration (Kinugawa et al., 1994) through NO, thereby damaging cardiomyocytes and playing a negative role in MI.
