IGF1 and Anorexia: The adverse effects of inflammation on growth and skeletal muscle mass can be due to several factors that help the organism to adapt in response to aggressions, such as (1) predominance of catabolic over anabolic hormones (cortisol, glucagon and adrenaline/insulin, IGF-1, gonadal steroids), (2) inflammatory mediators (cytokines, prostaglandins, nitric oxide), and (3) anorexia, poor nutrition, and/or malnutrition.
