CD4 and AIDS: An editorial commentary by Ford et al. stated that the current European consensus definition of late presenters is a patient with ‘a CD4 cell count of < 350 cells/mm3 or an AIDS diagnosis within 6 months of HIV diagnosis’.11 As such, the vast majority of patients initiating ART in sub-Saharan Africa are late presenters and caring for these sick patients constituted a significant portion of the workload of the ID specialist.11
