Interestingly, as R-2HG is structurally close to α-KG, it competitively inhibits the activity of α-KG-dependent dioxygease, FTO, thereby increasing the overall level of m6A without affecting FTO expression and decreasing the stability of MYC and CEBPA mRNA in R-2HG-sensitive leukemia cells (Su et al., 2018).
