It has been hypothesized that a direct infection of T cells with SARS-CoV-2 triggers a cytopathic effect; however, the lack of ACE-2 receptors on the lymphocytes seems to exclude the possibility of a direct injury and indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infects human T cell lines through the CD147 spike protein on the surface of T lymphocytes, leading to cell apoptosis [90].
