The riluzole-induced activation of TRPC5 channels, while expressed heterologously (as in HEK293 Human Embryonic Kidney cells) or endogenously (as in U87MG glioblastoma cells), seems to be independent of various cytosolic components, such as phospholipase C activity or intracellular calcium stores, suggesting therefore that riluzole could have a rather direct effect on TRPC5 (Richter et al., 2014). The gene discussed is TRPC5; the disease is glioblastoma.
