MAPT and Alzheimer disease: Although the exact cause of AD is still debated, the accumulation of Aβ in the brain provided a rational basis to hypothesize that it represents an initiating factor in AD pathogenesis, activating a cascade of events that progresses with tau-tangle formation and ends in neurodegeneration (Attems & Jellinger, 2014; Bailey et al., 2004; Farkas & Luiten, 2001; Love & Miners, 2016; Matrone et al., 2008, 2009; Oakley, 2006).
