Regarding the ABCA1 and ABCG1 induction mechanisms, liver X receptor (LXR) agonists are the most well-identified transcription factors to stimulate ABCG1 and ABCA1 expression, resulting in promotion of cholesterol efflux from macrophages, and eventually protection against atherosclerosis in mice [15,23]. This evidence concerns the gene ABCG1 and atherosclerosis.
