In patients with severe to critical COVID-19, significant prognostic parameters include a decrease in serum albumin in line with an increase in serum concentrations of acute phase proteins (C-reactive protein, CRP, and ferritin), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and procalcitonin (PCT) [2]; an increase in serum activity of lactate dehydrogenase; increased plasma fibrinogen and D-dimer; and hypoxia [2,4,5]. The gene discussed is CRP; the disease is COVID-19.
