IL22 and clostridium difficile infection: In an animal model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) it has been shown that IL-22 produced by neutrophils leads to beneficial barrier function by increased epithelial cell proliferation and mucus production and leads to recovery.55 IL-22 is part of the immune response associated with type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) during CDI.56 With the other finding from aged animal models of CDI being the importance neutrophil response, the IL-22 may point to an important and possibly protective role in the immune response associated with ILC3.
