ATG16L1 and cancer: Future work establishing the role of proteins such as ATG16L1 in disease progression and determination of the true nature of the SQSTM1 puncta by proteomics and correlative electron microscopy, would allow us to unravel the precise mechanisms by which they achieve this and could be important for our understanding of not just BU pathology, but also other disease processes where selective autophagy is implicated, such as cancer and neurodegeneration.
