ACE2 and COVID-19: Based on the current information available, during the course of COVID-19, particularly in moderate to severe COVID-19 patients, there is likely to be a contribution of COVID-19 in atherosclerosis, perhaps due to the cytokine storm causing vascular dysfunction via the ACE2 pathway, which likely further enhances local inflammation (97) and subsequently results in further activation of endothelial cells in large vessels (98), in addition to the microvascular system.
