Indeed, most clinical evidence suggests neurological complications of COVID-19 are due to secondary effects of infection, including reduced O2 and hyperimmune responses, often referred to as “cytokine storm.” Serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines [e.g., interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)] in COVID-19 patients are significantly predictive and/or correlative to the severity of infection and mortality (Chen T. et al., 2020; Gao et al., 2020; Huang et al., 2020; Zhou et al., 2020).
