It is believed that myocardial damage could be caused by several mechanisms: hyperinflammation and cytokine storm leading to myocarditis, respiratory failure and hypoxemia causing damage to cardiomyocytes, downregulation of ACE2 expression, hypercoagulability which leads to coronary microvascular thrombosis, diffuse endothelial injury, inflammation and stress-causing coronary plaque rupture or supply–demand mismatch leading to myocardial ischemia/infarction [4]. The gene discussed is ACE2; the disease is myocarditis.
