In the literature, sarcoidosis, a granulomatous disease with major T-cell involvement,33,34 is known to cause decreased CD4+, CD8+, or CD19+ counts in up to 70% of patients,35,36 which seems to correlate with disease severity.36 CD4+ levels have, however, a broad range and, on average, lie above the expected cut-off in AIDS patients. The gene discussed is CD8A; the disease is AIDS.
