In a liver fibrosis and cirrhosis model, p53-expressing senescent stellate cells release IFN-γ and IL-6, promote macrophage activation toward tumor-inhibiting M1-state, whereas P53 null cells secrete IL-3, IL-4, and IL-5 that hinder macrophage activation and trapped in tumor-promoting M2-state (Lujambio et al., 2013). The gene discussed is TP53; the disease is neoplasm.
