Inflammasomes, such as NLRP3, form an arm of the innate immune system by mediating the activation of caspase-1 and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-18), leading to a cascade of inflammatory processes which, if unchecked, may result in systemic inflammation, a root-cause of metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, atherosclerosis, etc. [10,11]. This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and metabolic disease.
