Hypoxia also regulates the expression of miRNAs in cancer cells: in particular, the reduced expression of miRNA-199a-5p in turn targets the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor (HIF-1-alpha) overexpressed in MM cells [71], pointing towards a potential Achilles’ heel of MM that might be exploited therapeutically by inhibiting hypoxia, HIFs, and mTOR [72,73,74].
