A mild protective effect of IFN-beta might possibly be related to the reversal of SARS-CoV-2 inhibition of type 1 IFN molecules production and intracellular antioxidant nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 pathway [9,26,27], which is further emphasized by reports of severe cases of COVID-19 among patients with genetic and non-genetic deficiencies in interferon system components, such as low expression of IFN receptor gene or anti-IFN neutralizing antibodies [28]. This evidence concerns the gene IFNA1 and COVID-19.
